Live Online Saxophone Lessons
The classical saxophone is an endlessly expressive, powerful, and beautiful instrument. In my teaching, the core of my philosophy is first to show my students what the saxophone is capable of: how soft, how loud, how passionate and how intense the instrument can be. Second I endeavor to show my students what they are capable of through positive feedback and inspiration. With my help they can dazzle any audience! If you are interested in studying with me please read further to find the right option for you, or use the contact form at the bottom to request more information!
Why online lessons?
While about half of my students live in my city, the majority of them have switched to online lessons. Besides being much more convenient, we can accomplish all of the same goals using my comprehensive collection of highly professional recordings. Instead of playing duets in-person, the student can play along with a recording of mine all week! Our greatest teachers are those whose recordings we study and together with live feedback my students can go far.
FAQS

All you need to get started is an instrument and a computer or tablet with a built-in camera + microphone
For the best experience, I recommend connecting your computer to the internet with a cable rather than wi-fi. Wearing headphones and using an external microphone will also improve the sound quality, although these are not required.
I use the Google Meet platform for video lessons because of the ease of use.

I teach students of all ages! I have adult students who are well into retirement, high school and middle school students.
For elementary school students, I am designing a program using a special instrument called a Dood (like a plastic clarinet) which is meant for students aged 3 and up. It is as inexpensive as a recorder and can be washed in a dishwasher! For this I use the Suzuki method as I have completed Unit 1 training for recorder.

I use the Rubank series as my core etude book because it remains the most comprehensive for teaching students everything they need to know to do well in band class. Think of etudes as exercises designed to develop technique. To supplement Rubank I use several other books which contain songs, pieces, and duets which is how we use technique in playing real music. I like to find music from all eras of classical music including renaissance music, orchestral music, and important solo works.

Teaching online lessons has one great advantage; I can accommodate more schedules. I’m a night owl, so a 3 hour difference from areas like Seattle and Los Angeles, and even as far as Alaska is actually great for me!
I can teach in any English speaking country, so students from Canada, Australia, Great Britain and anywhere else in the world are welcome!

For advanced students, I want to make sure I not only teach them how to play, but how to teach. For select students who have completed the Rubank series, I hold short monthly sessions where I talk about teaching methods and student recruitment. Then for any students who come to me looking for affordable options, I refer them to my Young Professionals and provide guidance as they teach the beginning students. This is great for the older students as it gives them a head start in building their own studio before they even start college, and it provides affordable lessons to young students while still falling under my “teaching umbrella.” A win-win!

Another great way to save money, video response lessons allow the student to get feedback any time it’s convenient for them for a low price. The student will record up to 15 minutes of a piece or etude they are working on, and I respond with my thoughts and suggestions. This is great for students preparing for solo and ensemble, or auditioning for all-county or all-state band.
